Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu - 5 Days

Overview

The road of this trek perfectly combines live culture and natural beauty, a remote and ancient footpath with spectacular views with different ecological floors walking between mountains (Tucarpay) and gaps (Humantay), and others. Salkantay (6264m / 20551ft) is the magnificent snowcapped mountain that was considered the God of the mountains of Vilcabamba mountain range, worshipped by the surrounding villages for thousands of years. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of multiple days to complete; this route will take us back to the time of the Incas, accompanied by the spirits of the other nearby mountains, whose peak is higher than 5000 meters (16404 feet).

Itinerary

Day 1
CUSCO - MOLLEPATA (Marcoccasa) – SORAYPAMPA

For the begin of this adventure, our Andean View Travel guide pick you up early from your hotel 05:00 am – 5:30 am and we head towards Marcoccasa (3400m/11154f) for approximately 3 hours, passing by the towns such as Izcuchaca, Limatambo and Mollepata (3000m/9843f).
In Marcoccasa, we will meet with our muleteers, horses and the rest of trek team to begin the hike. We will begin a detour toward Humantay Lake, a marvelous lake in the mountains. After 3 hours of walking, we will have a panoramic view of the majestic Salkantay mountain and other mountains covered with snow. We’ll see majestic snow-capped mountains such as Humantay (5217m/17116f) and Salkantay (6264m/20551f). Our campsite is at Soraypampa (3900m/12795f).

Day 2
SORAYPAMPA - SALKANTAY PASS – CHALLWAY

For Today, nature will change from dry surroundings to snowy mountains and tropical areas. After our breakfast around 8:00 am, the guide of Andean View Travel lead and show you for the most difficult part of the hike (21 Km approx.), we will ascend until to reach the highest point Salkantay Pass (4600 masl) which offers an exceptional view of snow-capped Salkantay (6264m / 20551f) which is known as the second-highest point of the region and the Cordillera of Vilcanota, then we will descend and enjoy the lush vegetation of the changing ecosystem. On our way down, we will visit the amazing Salkantay Lake, around 1:00 p.m., we will have our lunch, in Huayracmachay., after 3 hours trek, we will arrive at our camp in Challway (2900 masl) amidst a tropical forest, and around 7:00 p.m., we will have our dinner.

Day 3
CHALLWAY - SAHUAYACO – PLAYA (SANTA TERESA)

At 7:00 a.m., we will begin our trek. We will walk for about 5 hours toward Sahuayaco, on the route, our Andean View Travel guide will show the region’s flora and coffee, cacao and fruit plantations. You’ll descend into a forest, enjoying the diversity of orchids, bromeliads and other plants, also we will go through Collpabamba, also called the “Forest Cloudy Brow” where we can view waterfalls, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds. If we are lucky, we will be observing the famous bird called the “Cock of the Rocks”.
Arrive at Sahuayaco around midday, here we have lunch, this afternoon we will visit with a local rural family and learn about the cultivation and processing of coffee, we learn about the complete process from the tree to the cup of coffee. We continue our tour by local transport until reaching our camping site, very close to Santa Teresa town. (Who wishes can go to the Cocalmayo hot springs to take a relaxing bath, You need to coordinate this visit with our tour guide).
Around 7:00 p.m., we will have dinner and camping.

Day 4
SANTA TERESA - LLACTAPATA - HYDROELECTRIC - AGUAS CALIENTES (MACHU PICCHU TOWN)

After an early breakfast, we will take the Inca trail to the ruins of Llactapata (2,650 masl) in the midst of capricious vegetation, we visit this Inca archaeological site, we also enjoy the exceptional view over Machu Picchu mountain and Vilcanota Canyon. Then we continue to down a path, which will take you to the Hydroelectric station (1,950 masl), here you will have time to rest and enjoy the scenery and lunch at a local restaurant. We continue our journey taking approximately 3 hours (10 km), first to the community of Mandor; where we will arrive after 1:30 hours approximately and the last part of the route to reach Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) we will do it in an hour and a half more. (Optional we can take the train to enter the town of Aguas Calientes town (2050m/6726f) no included).
Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel, around 7:30pm we will share the farewell dinner with the guide at a local restaurant at which time we will inform you about the plans for the next day.

Day 5
AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN – CITADEL OF MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

The most important day of our trip, getting to discover one of the 7 wonders of the world, The Citadel of Machu Picchu (2,400 masl), for that after breakfast, We will pick you up from the hotel to take the tourist bus to Machu Picchu, this is a short trip lasts 30 minutes. Then we can visit the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for two hours approximately accompanied by our Andean View Travel specialist guide who will explain to us, about the historical legacy of the citadel of Machu Picchu, and the full description of this great and imposing attraction and after that. After the excursion, you will have free time to explore the citadel and take pictures or if you have the ticket, you can ascend to Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain (with advanced reservation) on your own.
After all of this, you must descend from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes town by bus, you can then have relaxed and have lunch in one of the many restaurants before you board the return train to Ollantaytambo (2 hours of travel by train) where our transport to the city of

INCLUSIONS:

  • Pre-departure briefing with our guide 1 or 2 days before the start of the trek around 19:00pm, to be confirmed when booking.
  • Transport: Collection from your hotel in the morning and transfer in transportation to Mollepata (Marcoccasa) starting point of the trek.
  • English speaking professional and official tourist guide: (The standard group size is 10 guests and 1 guide, with a maximum of 16 guests and 2 guides), for a French-speaking guide, please contact us in advance!
  • Personal tents: 2 people in each 4-people-capacity tent, to allow for higher comfort and a safe keeping of backpacks. Our tents are 3-season, highly maintained to ensure an excellent performance in field. Kailas, Pro aconcagua and Rei 4 Outfitter tents are employed when double accommodation is requested.
  • Camping equipment: Dining and kitchen tents, tables, chairs.
  • Inside the tents: Sleeping pad or matrasses

  • Wake up tea: Every morning at the campsite we will wake you up with a cup of coca tea our support staff will bring the coca tea to your tent in order to wake you up.
  • Tea time: Every afternoon 1 hour before dinner the cooks will let on the dining table pop-corn, biscuits, coffee, chocolate, different type of teas, hot water, etc. this is because after a day of hiking many are hungry and it is a bit annoying to wait till dinner that why we provide tea time.
  • Safety staff: Our crew bring the First-aid kit including an emergency oxygen bottle
  • Train tickets: From Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (tourist service)
  • Transport: Transfer from Ollantaytambo Train Station to Cusco (Day 5)

  • Sleeping bags (you can hire from our company for an additional cost), our sleeping bags are -18ºC-comfort (0ºF), mummy form and include a sleeping liner. They are cleaned after every use and have a maximum usage of 30 trips
  • Entrance ticket to Huaynapicchu Mountain (This is a good option but you must book in advance due to the limited number of spaces, price US$ 70)
  • Entrance to the Hot Spring (S/ 10.00 Peruvian soles)
  • Tips: Please note that our agency staff is well paid so please feel free to tip or not as you wish.
!IMPORTANT NOTES:

Note 1: If the passengers visit only Machu Picchu, the guided tour is two hours, but if they go up to Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, the passengers will only have an introduction for an hour at Machu Picchu.
Note 2: You must email us a scanned copy or photograph of your passport immediately after you have booked your tour. This is to enable the purchase of your Machu Picchu entrance ticket. It must be the passport you will use to enter Machu Picchu itself. This is a requirement when booking any tour of Machu Picchu from any operator.
Note 3: If you are staying at a different location than the one you select as your pick up location, it is explicitly your responsibility to be at the main entrance of the hotel or hostel selected as your pick up location for the duration of the pickup time range on your tour date. You must be in a visible place easy to see for the operator and be alert for their vehicle/guide when they go to pick you up for the tour.

SOME IMPORTANT TIPS:

• Porters, cooks and guides always appreciate tips for their services. The porters are also grateful for small donations of clothes and school supplies for their children.
• Student Card: For the $ 20.00 student discount, you must have a current ISIC student card with valid expiration dates and a photo when booking – not just when you arrive in Cusco it is nessesary for Machupicchu too! Please send a copy of your student card when booking, and bring the actual card with you.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING

• Your original passport or original ISIC student card (to receive the student discount) must be shown at the entrance of Machu Picchu and if you wish you can have it stamped at the end of the trek.
• Backpack with rain cover and a change of clothes for 5 days for both warm and cold climates (30- or 40-liter capacity is sufficient).
• The climate can be very cold and wet, so your wet clothes won’t have enough time to dry. Take extra clothes.
• Trekking shoes/boots.
• Slippers or sandals (for showers and hot springs).
• Woolen/synthetic socks and a sweater.
• Rain poncho/waterproof jacket and a hat.
• Swimsuit (if you wish to visit the hot springs)
• Sunscreen, insect repellent, toilet paper, small towel, hand cleaner/disinfecting alcohol gel, personal toiletries.
• Camera (with rain protection), a flash light/headlamp and extra batteries.
• Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, dried fruit etc.
• Water bottle and sterilizing tablets.
• Cash in soles and US for your own expenses.
• Optional: walking sticks or poles (rubber covers required)
• Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain, or cold.
• Sleeping bag.
• Sleeping mat (we will provide you with this one)
